Bucky Fuller

"Bucky Fuller"
Sculptural Prayer

Based on Buckminster Fuller's Dymaxion Map, related to his geodesic dome, this piece serves as a lesson in hand scoring and folded metal design. The pattern that Bucky Fuller created was a flat blueprint of the earth composed almost entirely of equilateral triangles. I have reinvented the design to include only equilateral triangles in order to streamline and ease the process of assembly.

Here you can see the Dymaxion Map design laid out flat:

His blueprint of the world in this format drew my attention right away by it's strange configuration of the continents. After reading more about his plans, I came to understand that he meant to allow for this to happen, to inspire and teach a more logical and accurate representation of continental relationships.

The geometric shape constructed is an icosahedron, or 20-sided polygon and platonic solid in Euclidian geometry. This 3-dimensional figure is also a symbol of the elemental water, a life force and a liquid that is unique to Earth as compared to the other planets in our solar system.
